What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese natural (holistic) healing practice, offered through light touch that promotes balance of the body, mind and spirit. It balances and strengthens the body’s energy, promoting its natural ability to heal itself. It’s a great technique for stress reduction and relaxation.
Reiki is made up of 2 words, ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki’ together they translate as universal, life-force energy. Basically it’s an energy created by life itself. All living things have this energy.
What is Karuna Reiki®?
It’s basically a stronger version of Traditional Reiki. The word ‘Karuna’ is Sanskrit word loosely translated to mean any kind of action that is used to diminish the suffering of others. It can also be translated more simply as “compassionate action.” It is said that Karuna is something that is sent by all enlightened beings to heal the world. By practicing it, not only do we share it with others, but allow ourselves to be even more open to receive it directly from the source.

How does Reiki work?
Ki or life force energy flows through us, which is what makes us alive. When we are healthy, this energy is balanced and flowing freely. If this flow is disrupted it is the main cause of illness. This as well as emotion, physical trauma, thought forms, and stress can form energy blockages, or create a deficiency of this life force energy. Using Reiki helps ‘refill’ the deficient areas and/or remove any blockages allowing a person’s life force energy to flow smoothly. The Reiki energy itself knows where it is needed and responds accordingly. It always works for the greatest good of the individual.
This energy is channeled through the hands of the Practitioner. He/She is simply the conduit for this energy.
From a more scientific viewpoint:
summarized from “The Reiki Touch” by William Lee Rand
Electrical currents flow through our body and is what sustains life. For example, an electrocardiogram measures the electrical currents of the heart. Other similar instruments measure this electrical activity in other areas of the body such as the brain, nervous system and muscles.
Electrical currents create an electromagnetic field around the area that is flowing with electricity (Ampere’s Law). Medical devices such as the magnetocardiogram, magnetoencephalogram and magnetomyogram, measure the magnetic field in the body and its organs.
Magnetograms have proved that in each organ exists a pulsing electromagnetic field. A healthy organ will pulse with a specific range of frequencies. When an organ is unhealthy the frequency range will deviate from the healthy range.
The hands of a Reiki Practitioner produce strong pulsing electromagnetic fields not found in the hands of non-energy healers. Using a process called “magnetic induction” (aka Faraday’s Law) the electromagnetic fields pulsing from the Reiki Professionals hands will bring the unhealthy electromagnetic field of the organ back into a healthy frequency range therefore helping the organ return to a healthy state.
Belief in God, or even Reiki itself, is not needed to receive the wonderful results of a Reiki session.
Other methods that also use this Universal life-force energy is Acupressure, Acupuncture, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Shiatsu and Yoga.
Is Reiki a religion?
Reiki is not a religion. It has no dogma. It’s suitable for people of all backgrounds and belief systems. It’s truly something that is open to all people. It has also been known to bring people a deeper sense of spirituality.
Where did Reiki come from?
Being that Reiki is Universal Life Force Energy, it has always existed. It’s possible that over time it has been known as many different things.
However there is a degree of history that goes with the word Reiki. Here is a very brief overview:
Likely in 1922 Mikao Usui went to Mt Kurama (near Kyoto Japan) to meditate for 21 days. There is where he re-discovered Reiki. During 1922 he started a society called “Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai” meaning “Usui Reiki Healing Society.” He also opened up a clinic in Tokyo where he did sessions and taught classes. He used this to help as many people as he could.
Chujiro Hayashi was a medical doctor and had been an officer in the Navy. He may have been the last Reiki Master to be trained by Mikao Usui. He carried on with Usui’s work after his death in 1926.
Hawayo Takata was a Japanese women born and raised in Hawaii. Later in life she developed many severe ailments leading doctors to want to do exploratory surgery on her. Before this could happen she had gone to Japan for a funeral. During that time in Japan she was guided to go to Chujiro Hayashi’s clinic in Tokyo. After 4 months of daily treatment she was healed of her ailments. Since she wanted to be able to bring Reiki back to Hawaii with her, she took classes from Hayashi. In 1937 she returned to Hawaii, followed by Mr. Hayashi in 1938, and he helped her establish Reiki there. That is the start of Reiki being brought to the United States.
What happens during a Reiki session and what does it feel like?
During the first session, an intake form will need to be filled out. Any questions can be addressed before or after the session. The individual will lie fully clothed on a massage table (shoes off or on is your choice). A blanket will be provided if needed. One may start lying on their back, or on their stomach, and during the session may be asked to roll over to cover the other side. Reiki can also be performed in a chair if required.
During the session there will be a combination of hand positions used from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet, and on any specific areas that may need additional time. Depending on preference, the hand positions can be hands on (where light touch is used) or just above the body (no touch is used).
What everyone experiences during a Reiki session is different. Most commonly, people report feeling very relaxed, some to the point of drifting off to sleep. Sometimes people may feel things like light heat/coolness, and/or other sensations. Emotions may also surface. Others may experience insights, visions, colors and so on. All of this is a natural part of the re-balancing process that is taking place energetically. Individual experiences will vary. One does not need to feel Reiki for it to work.
As quoted at www.reiki.org “A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results.”
Is Reiki safe? What conditions can Reiki be used for?
Yes Reiki is safe. The beauty of Reiki is that it can do no harm. It cannot be used in a negative way. Its purpose is to bring your mind, body and spirit into balance, which allows the natural healing powers of the body to do its thing. It always works towards your highest good.
More and more Reiki is being used in hospitals. Its never meant to replace traditional medical care from a qualified professional but is a great supplement. Reiki can be used in conjunction with other conventional (medical and psychological treatments) and complimentary/alternative treatments. It helps speed the recovery process, reduce medication side effects, etc.
There is no limit of possibilities of what Reiki can help with. Here are only a few things.
♦ Help boost/strengthen the immune system
♦ Ease the side effects from radiation or chemotherapy
♦ Promote our own self-healing and adapts to our specific needs
♦ Relax the body and mind
♦ Aids in meditation and positive thinking
♦ Clear up skin problems (rashes, sunburns, the like)
♦ Improve digestion and circulation
♦ Release toxins and negative thoughts/stress
♦ Help recovery of minor issues (colds, flus, cuts, scrapes)
♦ Calm the mind and one’s emotions
♦ Enhances personal awareness and creativity
♦ Ease muscle aches/tension/sprains including Back/neck pain
♦ Promote quick healing of broken bones and damaged ligaments/tendons
♦ Help with digestive issues

♦ Improve Menopause symptoms as well as PMS and menstrual pains
♦ Reduce inflammation caused by any injury or trauma
♦ Help with major issues (heart disease, cancer etc)
Reiki is helpful for:
Includes infants and children of all ages. Sessions are usually shorter for children then with adults. Results are equally beneficial.
ϖ Performing Artists and Dancers
It will aid in the releasing of nervous energy, and anxiety, including boosting self-esteem and self-confidence. It’s a great way to prepare for an audition or before a performance. For those with a physically demanding performance or audition, Reiki also helps with improving circulation, coordination, and any injuries or past injury flare-ups.
ϖ Pregnancy and Fertility
It will help with the aches/pains and other discomforts or side effects caused by fertility treatments and/or pregnancy and birth. The recovery time after the birth will be expedited as well. It’s especially good for those trying to conceive, high-risk pregnancies, and the fear and anxiety that may accompany them.
ϖ High Stress jobs
Stress alone can be very damaging to the mind, body, and a person’s relationships. Those people with dangerous and even life threatening jobs it can be 100% more so. This includes people that attend to trauma victims and may deal with life and death every day.
ϖ Balancing Mental and Emotional responses and behavioral patterns
For example grief, anxiety, depression, anger and fear are eased. Compulsive and addictive behavioral patterns (including drug and alcohol dependency) respond well to both Traditional and Transformative Reiki.
A lot of the time physical pain is simply a manifestation of emotions stored in the body, whether it is from recent stressors, trauma, or those carried through life. By balancing and healing the emotions, physical pain or issues may also improve as well. One doesn’t even need to be consciously aware of the problem or its roots; Reiki will still do its job.
This could be mental/emotional or physical trauma due to accidents, abuse, medical operations etc. Both Traditional and Transformative Reiki can aid in the healing on both an emotional and physical level.
ϖ Home and Office Clearings
Energy can reside and build up in all kinds of places, including homes and offices. Most often when negative energy gets built up in a home or office, it can cause people to feel exceptionally drained, have negative emotions come up more often, and may just give off a sense of discomfort or uneasiness. Both Traditional and Transformative Reiki can help lift and dispel the residual energy left in the area.
ϖ Seniors and the Terminally Ill
Whether it is the natural denigration of the body due to old age, or a terminal illness, both Traditional and Transformative Reiki is very effective in bringing a strong sense peace to the individual. Thereby reducing pain and enhancing the time they have left.
NOTE: A cure can never be guaranteed with any type of medical treatment or healing method. Reiki is not meant to create immortality, just to create a better quality of life and increase self-awareness. Its never meant to replace traditional medicine but is a great supplement.
How does Distance Healing work?
The Universal life force energy used in Reiki does not require a particular proximity for a session to be effective. In other words, energy is interconnected and doesn’t require a physical locality for it to be transferred. This gives people the freedom of not needing an in-person session, allowing them to have one from the comfort of their own home from anywhere in the world.
An appointment will be set up for a specific date and time. The individual will get a phone call at the designated time. Just like with an in person Reiki session, any questions will be addressed. After this, they can relax where they are, be it lying down or it their favorite chair. The session will be begin and they will receive a call back when it is over to check in and see if they had any further questions or wanted to discuss their experiences.
How does Aura Clearing work?
An Aura Clearing session alone is very similar to a Reiki session, but only a half an hour long. The main focus of the session is to locate and clear any unhealthy energy stored in the auric field. This can be done lying on a massage table or in a chair. In general, there is zero hands on contact, as much of the work is being done in the auric field. A person may also experience a wide range of sensations, thoughts, and feelings during the session, or nothing at all. Aura Clearings can also be coupled with any Reiki session. To know more about Aura’s see ‘What is an Aura?’
How does Chakra Balancing work?
Like the aura clearing, it is also by itself a half an hour session done lying down or sitting in a chair. A pendulum is used to measure each chakra point, to determine which of them may be out of balance. Reiki will then be used to bring the chakras back into harmony. Very little if any hands on contact will be used, since the chakras extend outward from the body. This session is strictly focused on getting the chakras back into balance. Again, a person may also experience a wide range of sensations, thoughts, and feelings during the session, or nothing at all. Chakra Balancing can also be coupled with any Reiki session. To know more about Chakras see ‘What are Chakras?’
Can Reiki make you sick?
Reiki cannot and does not cause illness or disease. In some instances (not all) upon an initial Reiki session one may experience some slight symptoms (cold-like symptoms, aches/pains) or increase of their current symptoms for 24-48 hours (more often its 24hrs). This is due to the fact that when the body, mind, and spirit are trying to realign themselves, bringing things into balance, it might have to cleanse or purge stored toxins in the body that are not contributing to the healing process. This is simply the body’s natural way to heal itself. So it is a normal sign that healing is taking place.
Should this happen, to aid in this healing process, drink lots of water and get plenty of rest. Be sure to nurture yourself as you normally would, and be sure to release any negative feelings or thoughts that may arise. Additional Reiki sessions will also speed up this recovery process.
Is there any medical research done on Reiki?
Yes there is. In fact many hospitals, clinics and hospice programs offer Reiki as part of their standard care.
“According to the American Hospital Association, in 2007, 15% or over 800 American hospitals offered Reiki as part of hospital services.” Quoted from www.centerforreikiresearch.org
One of the largest hospitals in Northern California, The California Pacific Medical Care Center, has a Health and Healing Clinic that cares for those with acute and chronic illnesses. They use a wide range of types of complimentary care including Reiki. “Mike Cantwell, M.D., provides Reiki treatments along with Jody Fisken, who is also a massage therapist.” Quoted from “The Reiki Touch” by William Lee Rand. Information also comes from articles in the Reiki News Magazine
Dr. Oz has also featured Reiki on his show. His wife is actually a Reiki Master and on many occasions he has allowed Reiki to be given to a patient while he is doing surgery. The full story is from an article in the Reiki News Magazine
Research studies have shown that heart attack patients who received Reiki did better then those who didn’t.
How many people use Reiki?
It is estimated that there are about 4 million people worldwide who practice/use Reiki and the number continues to grow.
Some use it to heal themselves. Others use it to heal family & friends. Many people use to it in addition to their healing practice such as with:
- Massage Therapists
- Social workers/Therapists
- Holistic healers
- Energy workers
Can I learn to use Reiki?
Absolutely. It does not require a certain level of intellect or spiritual/psychic development. ‘Learning it’ means you are attuned to this energy, or in other words, opened up to it. This can be done in a class/workshop in a single weekend and be used right away. See ‘Classes’ under the ‘Sessions Info’ tab for more info on local classes.
